Literacy Volunteers History
Literacy Volunteers of South Central Massachusetts is one of ten affliates of the Literacy Volunteers of Massachusetts (LVM). Since 1975 this program (formerly the Literacy Volunteers of the Tri-Community) has provided personalized tutoring servces for a multitude of people with a variety of needs. Literacy Volunteers is an organization that can reach people who may not have ordinarily had the opportunity to attend classes due to scheduling, childcare, transportation, lack of funds, and other common issues. LVM povides a convenient, private, and infividualized program to all of those with the desire to improve their language, reasing, and/or writing skills. Literacy Volunteers has been made possible through the work of dedicated volunteers and generous sponsors. Becoming a part of this program has not only changed the lives of the students, but also of the volunteers. Help us to keep this tradition alive and to further serve a community need. |
The Literacy Volunteers of South Central Massachusetts provide a learner centered, individualized learning environment for adults learning to read, write, or speak English. The volunteer based, one-on-one tutoring allows our students to study language in an anonymous, personalized atmosphere which eliminates much of the stress and many of the problems associated with group learning as an adult. Students of the Literacy Volunteers play an active role in their own learning. They learn to identify their needs and goals, and strive to meet them with the support and guidance of their volunteer tutor. With this method, learning is not restricted to basic language and grammar skills, but to essential life skills and critical thinking. Literacy Volunteer tutors share in the learning process. With students from all over the world, many volunteers learn just as much about another culture as they are teaching about their own. More so than just teaching another individual, being a Literacy Volunteer means becoming a partner in another individual’s journey toward personal growth and education. There is a distinct relationship between literacy and community involvement and the progress of future generations. All of the participants of the Literacy Volunteers of South Central Massachusetts recognize that when we help each other, we all benefit. It is the right of all citizens to public education, and where public educations stops, it is our responsibility to educate ourselves. The Literacy Volunteers of South Central Massachusetts are dedicated to support and assist adults with their language and literacy needs with respect and dignity. |
Why Support the Literacy Volunteers?
Traditionally, we are used to learning in a classroom setting. It is more efficient, as more people can be served at one time, and students can learn from each other. So what does the Literacy Volunteers’ one-on-one tutoring method offer that is not addressed in group learning? Because the Literacy Volunteers’ program is free... …it eliminates the issue of the excessive cost of private tutoring or class tuition. Because the Literacy Volunteers’ program is private and confidential… …it provides a safe environment for adult learners who are embarrassed at their low skill level, and are afraid that their difficulty with language will be “discovered” by family, friends, employers or co-workers.
