Why Support the Literacy Volunteers?

Traditionally, we are used to learning in a classroom setting. It is more efficient, as more people can be served at one time, and students can learn from each other. So what does the Literacy Volunteers’ one-on-one tutoring method offer that is not addressed in group learning?

Because the Literacy Volunteers’ program is free...
it eliminates the issue of the excessive cost of private tutoring or class tuition.

Because the Literacy Volunteers’ program is private and confidential
it provides a safe environment for adult learners who are embarrassed at their low skill level, and are afraid that their difficulty with language will be “discovered” by family, friends, employers or co-workers.

Because the Literacy Volunteers’ program is individualized
it addresses the learner’s main issues and personal goals. With student centered learning, the pace, intensity, materials and skills learned are determined by the student with their tutor. It relieves the sense of anxiety associated with formal a formal classroom setting, particularly in the case of an individual with “past failure” in classes.

Because the Literacy Volunteers’ program is flexibly scheduled
it works around changing job schedules, overtime, multiple jobs, childcare and lack of available transportation.

Adult learners face very different needs than children and young adults. As a student of the Literacy Volunteers, individuals are given a learning environment that is specifically tailored to their lives, their goals, and their learning styles.
